Dr. Stephan Kohnen

Introducing Dr. Stephan A. Kohnen, the newest periodontist at Total Health Dental Care in Oakland, CA. Dr. Kohnen's path to dentistry is steeped in family tradition, with both his parents and grandfathers having been esteemed dentists in Germany. However, it was the allure of surgical specialties that captivated him, steering him towards the field of periodontics.

After obtaining his D.M.D. degree from the University of Muenster School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Kohnen was selected for an elite postdoctoral program in Periodontics and Implantology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. Excelling in his studies, he graduated at the top of his class in 1997. He honed his expertise in Europe, heading the Surgical Department at the CDC Kliniek in the Netherlands and pioneering the All-on-4 Dental Implant procedure, with over 3,000 implants to his credit.

Embracing adventure, Dr. Kohnen made a bold move from Germany to America with his wife and two children, a testament to his adventurous spirit and commitment to growth. Now, as part of the Total Health Dental Care family, Dr. Kohnen is excited to bring his wealth of experience and passion for periodontics to patients in the Bay Area.

When he's not in the clinic, Dr. Kohnen enjoys the simpler pleasures of life. His ideal Saturday morning starts with sleeping in, followed by a leisurely late breakfast featuring Cappuccino, Eggs Benedict, Salmon, and catching up on the latest news. An aficionado of unique flavors, he admits to a fondness for tuna as his favorite pizza topping.
