Most offices can look at an emergency, then refer you out. Our oral surgeon, root canal specialist, and gum specialist work at our Rotunda Specialty Center in downtown Oakland, so when we say we can see you today, we can usually treat you today. No second office, no new paperwork, no waiting a week in pain.
Total Health Dental Care treats dental emergencies the same day. Call (510) 495-1075 any day of the week: phones are answered seven days a week, including Saturday and Sunday, and same-day appointments are held Monday through Friday at our East Bay offices and at the Rotunda Specialty Center in downtown Oakland, where our oral surgeon, root canal specialist, and gum specialist work in one building. You do not need to be an existing patient, and no referral is needed. Every patient receives a written estimate before treatment. We accept all PPO plans, and Cherry payment plans are available: you can apply from your phone in about two minutes before you come in.

When should you seek emergency dental care?
Call for severe or persistent tooth pain, a knocked-out or loose permanent tooth, a painful crack or break, new swelling, an abscess, or a lost filling or crown that causes pain. Describe your symptoms and when they started so our team can explain where to go and what to expect.
Depending on your needs, care may include a temporary restoration, root canal treatment, an extraction, or treatment for a dental injury. We aim to relieve pain and stabilize the problem, then discuss follow-up care.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or serious facial trauma.
What to expect at your emergency visit
Your visit starts with an examination and X-rays if needed to identify the cause of your symptoms. The dentist explains the findings, options for relieving pain, and whether the tooth can be saved.
Before treatment, we discuss recommended care and estimated costs. Same-day treatment depends on availability and your clinical needs; some problems need temporary stabilization and a follow-up appointment.

A dental emergency is an urgent oral health problem that requires prompt professional evaluation to relieve severe symptoms, control infection, treat trauma, or improve the chance of saving a tooth. Common emergencies include severe toothaches unrelieved by over-the-counter medication, knocked-out teeth, broken or cracked teeth with sharp edges or pain, swelling of the gums or face suggesting infection, severe bleeding that won't stop, and lost restorations that cause pain or expose sensitive tooth structure.

Many dental practices accept emergency patients who are not already established with the office, but availability can vary. If your regular dentist isn't available, contact another dental office in your area and explain your emergency. Many practices hold emergency appointment slots for urgent situations.

Many hospital emergency departments do not have a dentist available and generally cannot provide definitive treatment such as fillings, crowns, or root canals. The ER can help manage urgent medical issues related to a dental problem and may refer you to a dentist for definitive dental treatment. For emergencies combining dental injury with facial trauma, jaw fracture, or airway concerns, emergency room evaluation is appropriate. They can address medical emergencies related to dental problems, such as severe facial swelling with airway concerns, uncontrolled bleeding from trauma, or fever suggesting serious infection.
